Black Bears, or Ursus Americanus (ur-sus amer-i-canus) as scientists call them, are a unique species of Bear. To understand this lets take a closer look at them.

- Black Bears are omnivorous (they eat both plants and animals).
- They eat plants, honey, nuts, and fruits,.
- They eat salmon, small mammals, insects, and sometimes young deer.
- Height: 2-3 feet
- Length: 4-7 feet

- Males: Average 150-300 pounds (But can get up to 600 pound)
- Females on average are slightly smaller (175ish pounds).
- Small than Grizzly Bears, Polar Bears, and Pizzly Bears (Polar Bear/Grizzly Bear mix).
Other/fun facts.
- They have an average life span of 10 years but can live up to 30.
- Although endangered in Ohio, there are over 600,000 Black Bears the USA.
- Black Bears can climb trees.
- Black Bears tend to be loners (excluding mothers and cubs).
- Although they usually bare 2 cubs in a littler, can have 1 to 6 cubs.
- Sometimes they hibernate in the winter, depending on food availability and temperature.
- Black Bears are not necessary black. They can also be brown, white or blue.
- They are more active in the morning and evening.
- The Black Bear can run up to 30 mph.
- Black Bears have a very strong sense of smell (7 times that of a dog) and hearing.
